Local Fire Departments Participate in Weekend Training
Three local fire departments, Broughton Volunteer Fire Department, Library Volunteer Fire Company, and South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company, participated in a weekend training exercise at Butler County Community College's Public Safety Training Facility during the weekend of October 26 – 28. This training provided a chance for the departments to practice working together at fires and ultimately provide better service to their communities.
The weekend event was named THINK, short for Training Helps Increase Necessary Knowledge. Broughton, Library, and South Baldwin formed a committee that worked for several months to plan the event with cooperation from the Public Safety facility coordinators. The training exercise was different than the usual burn training that is provided by the state classes. An emphasis was placed on conducting realistic scenarios, THINKing about how to deal with rapidly changing situations and cooperating amongst different departments while performing proper firefighting tactics.
Truck 270 from Broughton, Engine 271 from Library, and Engine 104 from South Baldwin, along with several squads and cars were taken to Butler County. A total of 28 firefighters and officers from those 3 departments participated in firefighting activities. The training was supported by many other people from the 3 departments and other agencies, including 5 junior firefighters, 7 various support personnel, 9 fire instructors, and several Butler County Community College personnel. The total number involved exceeded 50 people.
There were a total of eight scenarios enacted over the weekend. This included everything from smoke investigations, room fires, rescues, grill fires, electrical fires, night fires, and one car fire. Props, such as false walls, electrical outlets and switches, gas grills, and a real car were used to lend realism. The weekend was exhausting after a total of 16 hours of strenuous activity by all the firefighters on Saturday and Sunday.
This event could not have been done without extreme cooperation between the three departments and the Public Safety Training Facility. The event was a success and a lot was learned by everyone. Plans are already in the works for doing this again next year.
